Chandra Observation of Luminous and Ultraluminous X-ray Binaries in M101

چکیده
X-ray binaries in the Milky Way are among the brightest objects on the Xray sky. With the increasing sensitivity of recent missions, it is now possible to study X-ray binaries in nearby galaxies. We present data on six luminous sources in the nearby spiral galaxy, M101, obtained with the Chandra ACIS-S. Of these, five appear to be similar to ultraluminous sources in other galaxies, while the brightest source, P098, shows some unique characteristics. We present our interpretation of the data in terms of an optically thick outflow, and discuss implications. Subject headings: galaxies: X-rays—galaxies:individual (M101)—galaxies: spiral

An Unusual Spectral State of an Ultra-luminous Very Soft X-ray Source during Outburst
We report the results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a new outburst of an ultra-luminous Xray source in M101. During a Chandra monitoring observation of M101, M101 ULX-1 was found to be in outburst in 2004 December, the second outburst in 2004. The peak bolometric luminosity is about 3×1040 ergs s−1 (7× 1039 ergs s−1 in 0.3–7 keV). The outburst spectra are very soft and can generally...
متن کاملEVIDENCE FOR AN INTERMEDIATE-MASS BLACK HOLE: Chandra AND XMM-Newton OBSERVATIONS OF THE ULTRALUMINOUS SUPERSOFT X-RAY SOURCE IN M101 DURING ITS 2004 OUTBURST
We report the results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a new outburst of an ultraluminous supersoft X-ray source in M101. CXOU J140332.3+542103 was observed in a low luminosity state (LX ∼ 1037 ergs s−1) between 2004 January and May. The low-state X-ray spectra were relatively hard; the combined low state spectrum can be fitted with a combination of a power-law with photon index of 1.4...
متن کاملLuminous Supersoft X-ray Sources in External Galaxies
We use a set of conservative criteria to identify luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) in external galaxies. We test this approach on blackbody models, and then apply it to Chandra data from 4 galaxies: an elliptical (NGC 4967), 2 face-on spirals (M101 and M83), and an interacting galaxy (M51). We find SSSs in every galaxy, and estimate that the total SSS population of sources with L > 10 er...
متن کاملReconsidering the Identification of M101 Hypernova Remnant Candidates
Using a deep Chandra AO-1 observation of the face-on spiral galaxy M101, we examine three of five previously optically-identified X-ray sources which are spatially correlated with optical supernova remnants (MF54, MF57, and MF83). The X-ray fluxes from these objects, if due to diffuse emission from the remnants, are bright enough to require a new class of objects, with the possible attribution ...
متن کاملThe X-ray Spectra of the Luminous Lmxbs in Ngc 3379: Field and Globular Cluster Sources
From a deep multi-epoch Chandra observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 3379 we report the spectral properties of eight luminous LMXBs (LX> 1.2× 1038erg s−1). We also present a set of spectral simulations, produced to aid the interpretation of low-count single-component spectral modeling. These simulations demonstrate that it is possible to infer the spectral states of X-ray binaries from thes...
